.RAW in New York: Ukraine On The Front Lines

The exhibition “.RAW Ukraine on the Front Lines” will open in New York City on November 18 with the support of the Ministry of Information Policy of Ukraine. The exhibition presents a documentary photo chronicle of the hostilities in Eastern Ukraine since 2014 that demonstrates the transformation of the Ukrainian Army and society through the memories of eyewitnesses and direct participants of this process.  The exhibition features pictures from the book “.RAW Story of Changes of Ukrainians and Army”.

The name of the exhibition “.RAW Ukraine on the Front Lines” reflects modern Ukraine being not only in a military conflict zone, but also on the front lines of an information war. As State Secretary of the Ministry of Information Policy of Ukraine Artem Bidenko has stressed, as a result of the numerous violations of Ukraine’s informational sovereignty, there is a growing need to draw the attention of the international community to the events in the conflict zone. At the same time, there has been a modernization and rebirth of Ukraine’s Armed Forces over the course of these events. The bravery of Ukraine’s soldiers and assistanceprovided by volunteers and ordinary citizens helped the army survive the crisis of the first months of the conflict and provided impetus for the sweeping reforms taking place in the Ukrainian Army.

The exhibition showcases the work of 33 photographers from Ukraine, Belarus and the United States. They include leadingphotojournalists and curators Aleksandr Glyadyelov, Brendan Hoffman, Joseph Sywenkyj, Aleхander Vasukovich, and others. The exhibition has become an international platform for Ukraine’s informational and cultural diplomacy.

The opening of the exhibition will take place at 7 pm on November 18 at the Ukrainian Museum in New York. It will be hosted by Artem Bidenko, State Secretary of the Ministry of Information Policy of Ukraine, Alina Frolova, Director of the Centre for Strategic Communications StratCom Ukraine, and Oksana Horbach, Director of the Department for Communication and Transformation Campaigns of the Centre for Strategic Communications StratCom Ukraine. The exhibition will be open to the public from November 18 – December 30.

Before the opening on November 18, at 6:30 pm book co-author and war photographer AnatoliyStepanov will give a lecture on documentary photography.

The exhibition “.RAW Ukraine on the Front Lines” is part of the large photo project “Army.
